NJ professor accused of running prostitution site

MADISON, N.J. — A longtime New Jersey physics professor who dabbled in scuba diving and harbored dreams of working in the theater had another hobby, New Mexico police say: operating a prostitution website that may have catered to as many as 200 prostitutes and 1,200 clients.

David Flory was arrested Sunday at a Starbucks in Albuquerque, N.M., and charged with 40 counts of promoting prostitution.

The 68-year-old Flory has taught at Fairleigh Dickinson University since 1969 and has been a physics professor there since 1980, according to his website. He also has served as director of FDU’s School of Natural Sciences.

Flory, a married father of three according to the website, was being held on a $100,000 bond Tuesday. He didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail message. His wife didn’t return a phone message left at the couple’s New York apartment.

1) Make sure all information is truthful and accurate. Posting public information on someone is perfectly legal and moral. 2) You can't post social security numbers or any false information. It's best to avoid posting home addresses, not because it's illegal, but because your blog hosting company may have issues with it and take it down. 3) Pictures are worth a thousands words. Post pictures of these rogues if available.

4) Be prepared for angry and fearful responses from these rogues to take down their postings. It's understandable for them to be angry and fearful, but as long as you follow the lawful rules and post information that is truthful and accurate, you are fine.

5) Make the truth be known. As a start, email me your URL so I can link to it.

What happened was that RCProNo1 was arrested by the Montgomery County police for his illegal prostitution activities associated with TER. Montgomery County is in Maryland and borders the northwest and north border of Washington DC, while Prince Georges County in Maryland borders the eastern border of DC.

RCProNo1 was arrested by Montgomery County police several months ago and made a plea bargain to give access to his moderator account that contains sensitive information (like ip addresses, real names, email addresses, phone numbers, etc) of all escorts and johns in the DC region that are registered with TER. Montgomery County police is using that information to shut down escort agencies and arrest pimps, escorts, and johns.

No other crime is so openly confessed to in any forum as the crime of human trafficking. The Vice Section is using a variety of investigative techniques to make web hosts accountable for their complicity in the advertising of human trafficking. Consequently, Web Hosts are eliminating the internet site from their servers. This tactic has eliminated the internet sites for TGND Talent, Diamond Escorts, and Desirable Companions. Sadly, these sites are now moving to servers outside the USA to continue their illegal activities.

2. The Vice Section has effectively infiltrated the Erotic Review website and identified key members of the group. The Erotic Review is a website where members openly confess to illegal activities. The website’s members rate women’s appearance, sexual performance, etc. while providing information on contact numbers, organized crime outfits, and local police activities.

3. The Vice Section through plea agreements is now operating established and once legitimate escort internet sites where “johns” are currently providing names, places of employment, and contact numbers as if they are communicating with the now defunct service. These contacts are being utilized to arrange “john stings” and identify individuals on the demand side of human trafficking.

4. The Montgomery County Police Department has established a spread sheet that identifies all individuals advertising and participating in human trafficking in the jurisdiction of Montgomery County. This spreadsheet identifies participants in human trafficking by name, alias, escort service, telephone number, etc. The primary internet advertisers of human trafficking (EROS and Backpage) are being officially notified that these specific individuals are utilizing their site to participate in illegal activities. The Vice Section is also requesting that Backpage and EROS discontinue the future advertisement of these individuals or be prepared to be found complicit in the crime of human trafficking.

In parts 2 and 3, one of the key members of TER which the police arrested and bargained with is RCProNo1. The founder and former owner of a popular hooker-finding Web site pleaded guilty on Tuesday to trying to hire a hit man to kill a prostitute who's suing him.

David Elms founded TheEroticReview.com in 1999 and eventually became one of the most influential men in the call-girl biz. His site allowed johns to review and rate prostitutes, and Phoenix cops say he used it to promote the notorious Desert Divas escort ring broken up in 2008. He's named as a defendant in that case.

As part of the Desert Divas investigation, police stumbled upon Elms, who told an undercover officer he wanted a call girl killed and one of his Internet competitors roughed up.

After his arrest, Elms failed to show up for court hearings and went on the lam for two months. His odyssey reportedly took him to Dubai and Mexico before he was apprehended in June while trying to cross the international border in California.

He also pleaded guilty to illegal control of an enterprise for his role in the Desert Divas promotion. He's scheduled to be sentenced on March 8 before Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Carolyn Passamonte.

Without even looking up the internet on the benefits of legalizing prostitution, someone can come up with many benefits. Some I can think of from the top of my head.

1) Escorts are safer as they can freely come to the police to report crimes.
2) It will be easier to keep track of and contain sexually transmitted diseases.
3) Government and the citizens will receive tax revenue from prostitution.
4) Police and the justice/prison system will be relieved and can focus on real crime.
5) Escorts will be more prone to watch over cheating husbands if their cheating becomes too detremental to their family. Escorts will be licensed and have a responsibility to monitor detrimental activites by husband, or else get smeared or lose their license.

It would seem like a win-win situation for escorts and johns to legalize prostitution, but there is a significant number in that population that oppose it. It is the corrupt and criminally prone factions of society that oppose it, and the ones we are watching.

1) Competition (supply) in the escort industry would increase considerably and profit margins for escorts and pimps would go down considerably. A simple economic theory on pricing the supply and demand curve.
2) Because the sex industry becomes so prevalent and easily accessible, the thrill of sex will go down and so will the profitability.
3) Taxes will also take out a portion of the profits.
4) Human traffickers and criminal pimps will lose power and their reign of terror will come to an end.
5) For cheating husbands who hate their wives, legalizing would mean escorts have no reason to hide or change their names, phone numbers, addresses, and identity. This will make it much easier for wives to catch their cheating husbands and present a strong divorce case.

Breaking news. Our sex hero and wanted fugitive for three months, David Elms, has been arrested in southern California, south of San Diego. It is believed David Elms fled outside the United States to Dubai when his arrest warrant was issued. He then flew to Mexico and tried to cross the border on the ground to Torrance, CA. There was previously some misconceptions on who we are targeting. Some may think we are targeting all TER members or only Republicans. The updated introduction clarifies the target criminals who belong in any one of these categories.

1) Members who have terrorized, threatened, harmed, extorted, and/or defrauded escorts or other clients.

2) Members who are criminals of any kind.

3) Members who support right-wing fascist politicans trying to ruin and criminalize the escort industry.

We are not looking for all or even most TER members. Most TER members are good and decent people which I have no intention of exposing at all. However, as in real life, it's only takes a handful of corrupt bullies who happen to hoard all the power to ruin the reputation for everyone. But any TER member who fits in the category above deserves to receive the punishment for the pain and wrongs they inflicted.

We are not looking for exclusively Republicans. If David Elms were a Democrat, we would still go after him because he solidly fits in category (1) and (2). However, going after a prostitute solicitor who votes for right-wing fascist politicians criminalizing prostitution is all fair game. The police department's vice squads, as documented in 2006 by OnMilwaukee.com's Andy Tarnoff and Drew Olson, are still busy setting up sting operations in certain areas of the city. But just as officers work the streets to smack down solicitation, they're also doing the same job without even needing to leave their desks.

The Milwaukee Police Department has been working to combat the online offerings provided by various Web sites with a number of enforcement programs. A detective with the MPD vice squad, who asked to remain anonymous, says the department has made hundreds of arrests over the last five years.

But the police aren't just looking for the prostitutes.

"Nobody is left behind here," the detective says. "We go after the Johns just as much as we go after the prostitutes."

The department enlists undercover officers to make calls to various providers. Once a price is established over the phone, the officers arrive at a designated meeting place and place the suspect under arrest when money is exchanged.

Contra Costa Times: Prostitution king sought

Controversial adult entertainment guru David Elms, last known to be living in Torrance and Hawthorne, is a wanted man in two states.

Elms, who founded and ran an online prostitution rating service, was on probation for drugs and weapons convictions stemming from a 2006 arrest at a Manhattan Beach hotel when he was arrested last month in Phoenix.

The 37-year-old allegedly attempted to hire undercover officers there to kill a prostitute, who has a lawsuit against him, and hurt another man. But he was only charged in Maricopa County Superior Court with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and drug weapon possession charges.

Out on $150,000 bail, Elms failed to appear at two hearings scheduled earlier this month. A judge signed a bench warrant for his arrest and raised his bond to $300,000.

Meanwhile, prosecutors in Torrance are preparing to ask for his rearrest for violating terms of his probation by traveling out of the state and failing to stay out of trouble.

For TER, I say good call. I would say most TER members are not such bad people like David Elms and the scumbags featured here, but money, power, and sex corrupts, and since David Elms had too much of all three, he when down especially hard. Once again, most TER members are actually good people who are trying to make the escort industry safe and reputable, but it only takes a few David Elms type of corrupt, arrogant bullies who happen to take over TER to ruin the reputation of TER.

Through the bill, prostitution will remain legal, but it will be outlawed in public places.

New Federal Lawsuit Against David Elms of TER 11/7/2008

LOS ANGELES - A woman listed in court documents as Jane Doe has filed a federal lawsuit against David Elms, the owner of T*E*R, accusing him of cybersquatting and defamation.

T*E*R has become known as the premiere online destination for those willing to rank their experiences with prostitutes on a scale of 1 to 10, as well as to leave comments. Elms said he created the site, which was launched in 1999, because he wanted to empower customers after he felt he was being "ripped off" by various escort services.

The Long Beach, Calif., woman, who said in court papers she is involved with an escort service, alleged Elms created a website using photos and videos of her, and also that he "directed his anger and vengeance" at her because she refused to have sex with him. She also claims Elms sent letters to her family and friends saying she is a prostitute.

The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

It's the latest in a string of legal woes for Elms, who in June was arrested and held in a Los Angeles jail on probation violation charges related to a 2006 drug and weapons conviction.

At the time of the June arrest, court officials said Elms failed five drug tests since October 2007. He faces up to four years in prison if convicted of the probation violation charges.

WAUKESHA, WI - Eleven women were arrested this week for using the Craigslist to sell sex to men.

It turns out, the Harley celebration is big business for everyone, even escorts.

A big internet bust for Waukesha police: 11 women were caught in an undercover sting looking for unlicensed escorts, and these women were going after Harley riders.

"A lot of the invitations had direct reference to the Harley events that were going on right now, along with provocative pictures that had been posted on there,” Waukesha Police Captain Mark Stigler said.

Police caught the women by posing as Harley riders on the popular Web site Craigslist. They started a conversation, then they met in person.

“The undercover officers will ask them how much they charge for sexual favors and at that time they arrest them once they tell us that,” Cpt. Stigler said.

It isn’t the first time escorts have used Craigslist, but for people who use the Web site legally, it's still a shock.

Nine arrested for prostitution

Police arrested nine suspected prostitutes and johns in a sting that involved the popular Web site Craigslist.

The operation was run by the WEB task force, a joint effort between the towns of Bridgewater, East Bridgewater and West Bridgewater.

East Bridgewater Police Detective Michael Jenkins, the unit’s computer investigator specialist, initiated the third undercover prostitution investigation with numerous suspects advertising their illicit activities on “Craigslist” located under erotic services.

Craigslist is a centralized network of online urban communities, featuring free classified advertisements (with jobs, internships, housing, personals, for sale/barter/wanted, services, community, gigs, resume, and pets categories.)

The investigation was initiated based on intelligence and information received from various sources that indicated dozens of illegal escort services are presently operating in and around the Bridgewaters, said authorities.

The investigators received over 300 replies to the ad they placed on Craigslist.com, said Jenkins. “A lot of people think it is a victimless crime, but there is a lot more to it than that.”

Investigators not only searched for alleged prostitutes advertising their services on-line, but also initiated a “reverse prostitution” sting on Thursday, Aug. 21.

In the reverse sting, investigators advertised sexual services for sale using an undercover Craigslist user name.

On Thursday, WEB investigators arrested four males, who are alleged to have sought sexual services for fees from the undercover WEB office. Four females alleged to be involved in performing sexual acts for fees were also arrested. A male, who is alleged to be the “security and facilitator” for one of the alleged prostitutes, was also arrested.

The females arrested for engaging in sexual conduct for a fee were Michell Davey, 36, of Weymouth, Jennifer Schaaf, 22, of Hyde Park, Chenchi Lin, of Quincy and Emily Poland, 21, of W. Barnstable.

The males arrested for paying a fee for sexual conduct were Deric Lipski, 35, of Easton, Mark Snow, 53, of Weymouth, Jeffrey Wentworth, 36, of Bridgewater and John Dietel, 42, of Seekonk.

Harold Conille, 26, of Brockton was arrested for deriving support from prostitution.

The WEB Major Crimes and Drug Task Force is an investigative unit comprised of investigators from Bridgewater, East Bridgewater and West Bridgewater. The WEB Task Force working on this investigation included Sergeant Scott Allen and Detective Paul O’Brien from East Bridgewater, Sergeant Victor Flaherty and Timothy Nixon from West Bridgewater and Robert Bailey, Officer Lisa Mitton and Kelly Robson of Bridgewater.

Detectives this week used the site to conduct an online sting that resulted in seven arrests associated with the sex trade.

Det. Edwin Peckham said in addition to street level busts of prostitutes and prospective clients, police recognize services of this nature now are only a “keystroke” away.

A simple search of the “erotic services,” section of Craigslist in Eastern Connecticut, he said, reveals numerous listings.

Police not only responded to some of the ads, but they placed their own Craigslist ad with a female police officer answering calls and setting up meetings with potential clients.

Peckham said the listing generated more than 20 telephone calls and led to the arrest of four men who showed up at a meeting spot.

“They’re still calling ... even after the ad was taken down,” Peckham said.

In addition, police arrested a woman who showed up with two men who were arrested for promoting prostitution.

Local pimp sentenced to 30 years

Don Arthur Webster Jr., convicted earlier this year of multiple sex trafficking and drug charges, was sentenced Friday in federal court to 30 years in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervision.

Indiana access laws in need of strong teeth

It's easy to miss the irony and, thus, the lessons from last week's action by the Randolph Central School Board.

Board members met behind closed doors and asked fellow board member Dana Cox to resign after his arrest earlier this month on charges of soliciting a prostitute.

But when the Muncie Star Press began checking around, the newspaper learned that the school board went about things very unadvisedly.

Indiana's open meetings law dictates that public bodies conduct the public's business publicly.

Lynnwood, Washington - Lynnwood police say 15 people were arrested in a prostitution sting last week.

Neil Entwistle's escorting leads to murder of family

Neil Entwistle, 29, accused of murdering his wife Rachel, 27, and daughter Lillian Rose, 9-months, on Jan. 20, 2006, was born in England on Sept. 18, 1978.

While in England, Entwistle worked in the computer field while his wife was a teacher at St. Augustines Catholic School in Redditch.

They moved to Rachel's parents Carver home in 2006. Neil was unemployed, but he ran a series of online businesses, including one where he offered to set up and support adult internet World Wide Web sites.

He also ran another company, Embedded New Technologies Limited, which was listed on several business scam web sites as a possible pyramid scheme.

Entwistle ran srpublications, an EBay business that sold people a way to make $20,000 a month.

At the time of the murders, authorities say Entwistle was more than $30,000 in debt, a fact he hid from his wife and her family. In the days before the Jan. 20 murder, authorities say he visited online escort sites as well as web sites that discussed murder and suicide.

After the murders, Entwistle flew to England and went back to his parents home until his arrest in London on Feb. 8, 2006.

He is currently being held without bail at the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge. If convicted of first degree murder, he'll be sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.

It must suck to be them, being the nobodys they are, because if they get caught soliciting prostitution, the harsh laws their Republicans created will certainly damage their reputation and lives.

Another part of their empty lives they to not like to tell you is how empty their wallets are after spending typically $300+ an hour for one night stands with a hooker that could care less for them. Because prostitution is illegal, the reality is that prostitutes must charge higher fees to defend themselves from law enforcement.

Many of the active TER right-wingers are facing financial problems with their expensive and cloaked hobbying, and they are reaching dangerous situations in the future as they only get older with no retirement savings or future. At least one man honestly admits you will go broke spending your life away on escorts, but we all know many more TER members are in similar situations.

Bill Kegley is an addict. But it's not alcohol, drugs, food or shopping he's hooked on.

Kegley, 69, is addicted to sex.

Specifically, paid sex. It's cost him his life savings — $200,000 down the drain.

"I've given up on getting married again, but I do crave female companionship. And the only way I feel I can get it is by paying for it. I have a lot of testosterone," he said.

Prostitution is widespread in the Poconos, according to Kegley. It's as easy as ordering a pizza. Some services even have online galleries with photos of escorts, along with funky stage names reminiscent of professional wrestlers.

The services are even in the phone book, although with lists of services that do not include sex.

After 40 years of marriage, Kegley, a Stroudsburg native, was divorced four years ago. He has a daughter and an adopted son.

Kegley's educated. He has a degree in economics from Lafayette College. Before he retired, he was a mainframe computer programmer and information manager.

Now, Kegley is broke. His life savings are gone, his car was repossessed and he has a large credit card debt.

He carries a folder filled with pictures and notes about his experiences. The label on the folder reads "PITP," which stands for Prostitution in the Poconos.

All the wrong places
Kegley's downward spiral began after he and his wife divorced.

Kegley was a snowbird, spending winters in Florida and the rest of the year in his Canadensis home. He faced a winter of discontent in 2006-07, when he "started to go to all the wrong places."

Kegley was living with a woman in her condo in DelRay Beach, a community on the eastern shore of Florida, about 20 miles south of West Palm Beach. They had a big fight, so he went to a bar.

"I was lonely. I asked the bartender if he knew anyone for female company. He wrote down a phone number. I called them," he said.

The number was for an escort service. And so began his downfall.

"It's kind of addictive. Two who I met down there (in Florida), what happens, after you see them for a while, you can see them without the escort service. They get all the money. I bought them clothes," he said.

Kegley met an escort through a service and fell in love with her. She was 28 and took care of him when he was sick. He'd see her twice a week.

"She'd cook and clean for me. She is the only escort I know who doesn't lie. She's a pearl," he said.

The relationship went beyond sex for Kegley.

"I'm emotionally attached to (her)," he said. "I was just looking for one person to have a relationship with. She was too young for that. They'll all lie to get money, but she is different. I flew her up this week. But she's pregnant — someone else's. She's due the middle of November — a boy."

When he returned to the Poconos after the winter, he called Essence Referral for companionship. The Allentown service was advertised in the yellow pages. And he believed he could eventually bypass the service and work directly with the escorts. He said "from what I heard from one of the escorts, they will go out on their own."

But Kegley still wanted a female companion. He tried using personal ads in the Pocono Record.

"I tried that, and I got a date with a woman, but she got back together with her ex-boyfriend," he said.

So he went back to the escort services.

"I patronized two escort services ... since the beginning of May 2007. Essence Referral and Private Fantasy in Kingston," Kegley said.

He met an escort from Essence Referral, who went under the professional name Phoenix. "I saw her quite a lot. Everything went on credit cards," Kegley said.

Eventually, he bypassed the escort services and called the girls directly, since many had given him their phone numbers, and some even their addresses.

After 40 years of marriage, he was having trouble adjusting to the single life. "I hate to live alone. I have to have female companionship. I'm still active, if you know what I mean," Kegley said.

He started seeing Phoenix quite a bit. "Sometimes I would give her cash, but I blew through all my cash. So I started buying her stuff at Home Depot and Old Navy on my credit card," he said.

He described Phoenix as an auburn-haired 38-year-old with a 10-year-old daughter.

"She said before working for the escort service, she was a landscaper," according to Kegley.

He said the services offered in-calls and out-calls. "In-calls are when the service has a place ... they use for you-know-what. Out-calls are where they'll come to a person's house. I've always had them come to my house," he said.

The last straw
The incident that turned Kegley happened on Saturday, May 31, and involved Phoenix. As he described: "I called her to come up for a while. She took her daughter over to the father's mother. She came up here, got here at 4 p.m. She came in and said, 'Gee Bill, I could really use some clothes.' "

So Kegley took her shopping. "I bought her $700 worth of clothes in Old Navy in Stroudsburg. Then we went back to my house, had a couple of drinks and then doing the dirty. I had been drinking. Vodka and tonic. After the dirty, right before she left, she said 'Bill, I'm gonna take your computer.'

"I had a lot to drink. She just unhooked it, folded it up and took it," he said.

"The next day, I called up to find out when I am going to get it back. I couldn't get through. I tried on Monday, same thing. I was really getting ticked off. As far as I was concerned, she stole the computer," he said.

So, on Tuesday, Kegley called the state police at Blooming Grove.

"They didn't come. I told the trooper the situation on the phone. He said he'd try to get in contact with her," Kegley said.

He tried again to reach Phoenix. "That night she picked up her cell phone. I said, 'I want my computer back.' She said no. I told her I'd call the state police. Once I told her that, she said, 'I could kill you.' I took it as a threat. I was so pissed off she took my computer," he said.

"When I think of all the money she got from me, all the clothes she got from me. I was so pissed off. That was the last straw," he added.

So he called the state police again, this time about the threat, and spoke with a different trooper. "I just got something in the mail today. On handling harassment. Every time I call Blooming Grove, I get a different officer," Kegley said.

That's when Kegley decided he wanted the world to know what happened.

She started getting physical
Kegley called Private Fantasy on June 20, hoping to get one of the escorts to talk to the Pocono Record. A women who Kegley referred to by her "stage" name, Angel, arrived at his home at 7 p.m. He said he had hired Angel before, and that she was planning to enlist in the Navy.

Kegley asked her if she'd talk to the newspaper. "She started getting physical and said, 'Bill, we are going up to your bank at PNC at Newfoundland,' " according to Kegley.

She drove his car with Kegley sitting in the passenger seat. When they arrived, as Kegley tells it, Angel said, "Bill, you better give me your PIN number, or you're going to regret it if you don't."

She walked up to the ATM machine, and withdrew $350. She threw the crumpled receipt in his car. Then they went back to his house, where Kegley said she grabbed his wallet and took off.

Reports of criminal actions
Kegley filed a complaint with the state police at Blooming Grove. Lt. James Degnan, the commanding officer at the barracks, told the Pocono Record: "Mr. Kegley has reported some criminal actions to us, and we are investigating them. I can't comment on the particulars, but some of the details of what he provided to you and us are in conflict."

Kegley told the Pocono Record subsequently that details don't match because he was upset when he filed the reports with police.

Degnan said the release of details might jeopardize the investigation.

Pike County District Attorney Ray Tonkin said a prostitution prosecution involving an escort service would be unusual for Pike County.

"We've only had one massage parlor prosecuted here, so I'd say it's not a problem that we've noticed. And we have not had an escort service prosecution since I've been here," he said.

According to the district attorney, prosecution of these types of cases are difficult, but not impossible.

"The escort service can only be prosecuted if they have knowledge of what's going to go on between the client and escort," Tonkin said. He said he wouldn't elaborate on how District Attorneys make the case, since doing so might jeopardize future investigations.

He also said that although a client of a prostitute would have to admit to breaking the law to help prosecute a case, it could help as well. "It may bolster his credibility since he's willing to admit he's committing a crime," Tonkin said.

PNC Bank confirmed Kegley met with them about the incident. A spokesman for the bank, Ed Kozmor, would not provide any further information.

'He wants to marry the girls'
Private Fantasy owner Don Rodriguez said his service provides nude body massages, dancing and companionship. "It's 100 percent legal," he said.

Rodriguez charges clients $150 per hour for his girls, but the price depends on what part of his service area he sends them to.

Of that, Rodriguez gets $65. The driver he sends with the girls gets $40, and the girls get the remainder, $45.

As for clients like Kegley, "He likes to get the girls on the side. He wants to cut me out. He wants them as girlfriends. He wants to marry all the girls. That's where the problem comes in," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez has been in the business for 12 years. "The problem is with clients who want more than what I hired the girls to do. Only two times we had trouble, and in one, the guy went to jail for 12 years for rape," he said.

Rodriguez does business across several counties. "I have 26 girls working for me from Delaware Water Gap to Pittston City."

He said the police contacted him about Kegley's accusations. "I talked to them. I believe they talked to her, too," he said, referring to Angel.

"She gave him a massage. He wanted more than what I hired her to do. That's the problem," Rodriguez said.

Rose, who answered the phone at Essence Referral, where Phoenix works, refused to answer questions.

"I am only an employee here. You can talk to our attorney," she said.

But Rose wouldn't disclose the owner's name or provide the attorney's name or phone number. However, Essence Referral's Web site includes a description of its services, along with pictures of its escorts and some carefully crafted legal disclaimers.

The cost of doing business
Kegley's addiction was expensive. During one 12-day period in October 2007, he spent $6,850 for escorts. He spent $1,300 on just one of those days.

He bought diamond rings for two of the girls he thought would marry him. One, "Amanda," who was from Wilkes-Barre, came to visit Kegley.

"I paid $1,700 for Amanda for a full shift. I took her driving around the Poconos. I took her to Barley Creek for lunch," he said.

Kegley went through his life savings, about $200,000, in a year. All of his investments are gone.

Does he regret going to these services? "Now I do. I'm flat broke. I sold all my mutuals.

"I was lonely. My motivation was that most of the girls had kids, many with deadbeat dads. Sure, I got something out of it, but for the price, it's a pittance. I was addicted to escort services because I care about these girls.

"Pretty stupid, huh?" he said.

Kegley both accepts and at the same time denies responsibility for his plight. "I knew what I was doing. I couldn't help myself," he said.

But he said he's no longer addicted to the escort services. "When Phoenix stole my computer, my addiction was cured."

Kegley is not just broke. He's got $80,000 in credit card debt as well.

His wish is to prevent the escort services from sharing in the women's labor. "I hope these 'legitimate' businesses are put out of business," he said.

The Pocono Record attempted to contact the women identified by Kegley, but repeated phone calls were not returned.

Starting last month, the Chicago Police Department has been posting the names of "johns" arrested for engaging or soliciting prostitutes - along with their photo, address, age, and place of arrest. A recent sample included men from low-income Chicago neighborhoods and relatively well-to-do suburbs, of all ages and ethnicities.

It's part of a tactic more and more cities are using, cracking down on prostitution by focusing on demand, often using tactics of humiliation - like Chicago's website or billboards in Oakland, Calif. - to try and convince potential customers to stay home.

It's a trend that some applaud, saying the men who drive the trade have been overlooked too often while prostitutes get arrested. Others question its effectiveness, suggesting that websites and "john schools" that educate customers about the realities of prostitution accomplish little.

"The first thing you have to ask is why are people involved in prostitution - overwhelmingly it's related to economic issues," says Juhu Thukral, director of the Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center in New York. Focusing on demand, Thukral says, won't reduce the amount of prostitution; rather, more resources should go toward supportive housing, job training, and legal services - "programs that teach people how to get mainstream jobs that will provide a living wage."

Still, others involved in the issue say that efforts like Chicago's are an encouraging sign that cities are both waking up to the problems around prostitution and are recognizing that customers play as important a role as the prostitutes.

In Chicago, the website has been up for only a month, but has gotten more than 497,000 hits, says David Bayless, a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department. [ Editor's note: The original version incorrectly counted the traffic to the police website.]

"If we can get them to think twice about coming here, if they think they're at risk of being arrested and having their picture online, then the website's done its job," he says. "It's an acknowledgment that customers are contributors to the problem."

To discourage local prostitution, the city and county of Denver are broadcasting mug shots of men convicted of soliciting prostitutes. "Johns TV," which airs twice daily, debuted on July 25 on a local cable channel. The television show is supplemented by a Web site, www.denvergov.org/johnstv.

"The city has given ample warning to those who choose to engage in the crime of prostitution," Mayor Wellington Webb said in a press release announcing the debut of the new service. "If you choose to risk being arrested for prostitution, if you choose to risk catching a sexually transmitted disease, you now also choose to take the risk of having your picture appear on TV and on the city's Web site for the whole world to see."

The city and county of Denver follow in the footsteps of other cities -- including Aurora, Colo.; Orlando, Fla.; Oklahoma City; St. Paul, Minn.; and Kansas City, Mo. -- that print photographs of "johns" in newspapers, on TV or on the Web. They began the practice following requests from residents to help drive prostitutes out of neighborhoods.

"This always has been a quality-of-life issue," mayoral spokesman Andrew Hudson told the Denver Post. "The real victims are the neighborhoods that have to endure prostitute-related activities."

Original plans for the broadcasts included mug shots of convicted prostitutes, but, after reviewing the show and the Web site, the mayor felt that was unnecessary. Instead, the TV show and Web site provide information aimed at prostitutes about substance abuse programs, job training programs, health care services and safe houses for abused women.

The cable TV program lasts about 15 minutes and is run back-to-back to make up a 30-minute program, according to the newspaper. The 30-minute show airs once each morning and evening. The Web site, like the cable program, displays the johns' mug shots, names, birth dates and dates of convictions. The photos are updated monthly.

ESCONDIDO (San Diego, CA) – Three out-of-state women were arrested on suspicion of prostitution Friday and seven Southern California men on suspicion of soliciting prostitution, Escondido police said.

The sting operation focused on an area between Centre City Parkway, Broadway, Mission Avenue, and Valley Parkway in Escondido, said special investigations Sgt. Greg Ellis.

Undercover male officers first acted as “johns” and arrested the women, two from Las Vegas and one from Omaha, Neb., Ellis said. It is common for suspected prostitutes in the city to be from out of state, particularly Nevada, he said.
The men were arrested by female officers who went undercover. All 10 suspects face misdemeanor charges.

Phoenix police arrest 6 more in prostitution ring

Phoenix, Arizona police have arrested six more people suspected of being involved in a three-state prostitution ring.

Authorities said Ahwatukee resident Sean Carter, 39, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of offenses including money laundering, running a house of prostitution, receiving the earnings of a prostitute, pandering and use of wire or electronic communication in prostitution.

Five women also were taken into custody, all who allegedly worked as escorts for the ring which authorities said spanned Arizona, New Mexico and Pennsylvania.

Police said arrested on suspicion of money laundering and illegal participation of an enterprise were Michelle Lea Evans, 23, Delain Hunt, 41, Ivie Johnson, 22, Tiffany Nelson, 20, and Tanya Powers, 27.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said 55 people were indicted in July on 17 felony counts in connection to the prostitution ring that pulled in an estimated $250,000 per month.

Twenty-nine people have been arrested this week in connection with the case, police said.

Hickory, North Carolina - A reverse sting by the Hickory Police Department Thursday resulted in the arrest of five men for soliciting prostitution.

This is the third sting operation of the summer. It came as a result of residents complaining about prostitution and the department's ongoing efforts to curb the sex trade here, said Libby Grigg, department spokeswoman.

Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins is committed to fighting prostitution. "The operations conducted last night are the result of responding to the neighborhood concerns of illegal activity. The Hickory Police Department will continue to focus its resources on the issue," he said.

The sting consisted of female police officers posing as prostitutes near the intersection of Fifth Street and Seventh Ave. Drive, SW. Grigg said the officers were approached by men within minutes of beginning the three-hour operation.

The summer's first sting was conducted in May near U.S. 70 between N.C. 127 and Fifth Street, SW. It resulted in the arrest of four women and six men. The six men and one of the women were arrested in a reverse sting for solicitation. The female undercover officers approached the men with a simple "hello" said Hickory Police Capt. Clyde Deal. The men then offered money for services and were arrested. The operation took place between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m.

The second sting happened at Geitner Park in July. Two men were arrested when they solicited a male undercover officer.

During Thursday's operation, Anthony Eugene Smith, 49, of Sherrills Ford and Armando Angel Castellanos, 33, of Newton, were arrested for solicitation of prostitution and soliciting crimes against nature. Both men's bonds were set at $750.

Duane Harold Carlton, 75, of Granite Falls, and Larry Wayne Sigmon, 46, of Newton were arrested for soliciting crimes against nature. Their bonds were set at $500.

Myron Anthony Dula, 48, of Hickory, was arrested for solicitation of prostitution. His bond was set at $500.
